Large oblong 2° (sheet size 654 x 856mm). Engraved title vignette, 9 mounted copper-etched plates by Sprosse on china paper forming a large panorama (engraved area 4410 x 6633mm). With 9 smaller lithographic key plates (287 x 446mm), one signed by E. Pistrucci, 18 Newman St. (Mounts slightly crinkled and with a few edge tears, a few spots on first and last plates, title affected by a few short tears and light marginal spotting.) Unbound as issued in original blue wrappers with title label on front cover (spine torn at foot, some short tears). FINE IMPRESSIONS OF THIS RARE PANORAMA OF ROME with a viewpoint outside the walls between Nomentana and Salaria, stretching from the Villa Medici to the Villa Borghese, Monte Gennaro, Villa Ludovisi, the Palazzo Barberini, Quirinale, Villa Malta, and finally St. Peter's. The title vignette is signed by Sprosse and dated Rome 1847. Three plates are signed and dated Rome 1847; Rome, June 1847; and Rome, June 1848 respectively. A copy from the collezione Antonacci was in the exhibition: Roma veduta: Disegni e stampe panoramiche della città dal XV al XIX secolo, Palazzo Poli, 30 September 2000-28 January 2001, edited by M.G. Sassoli (Rome 2000), pp. 226-228 no. 70: 'Il particolare formato dell'incisione, che si sviluppa per una lunghezza superiore ai quattro metri, ha portato alla conservazione di esemplari non completi montati in modo da maschere la mancanza di una o più tavole o frammenti di tavola'. The Museo di Roma copy is currently on exhibition: Roma, la magnifica visione: vedute panoramiche del XVIII e XIX secolo dalle collezioni del Museo di Roma, catalogue of an exhibition, edited by Patrizia Masini, Museo di Roma, 15 November 2008-19 May 2009 (Rome 2008). Maria Elisa Tittoni, director of the Museo di Roma, affirms that of all the panoramas: 'la più imponente per le straordinarie dimensioni e per la fedeltà della rappresentazione è l'incisione all'acquaforte da otto matrici del Panorama di Roma di Carl Ferdinand Sprosse realizzata fra il 1846 e il 1847'.
