Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, covers with wide gilt border with dog-tooth roll and alternating fleurons, smooth spine in 6 compartments, gilt-lettered in one, a repeated gilt panel in the rest, edges gilt concealing a fore-edge painting of A BILLIARD GAME after Thomas Rowlandson (corners worn, covers lightly scuffed). Provenance: George Goodwin (gift inscription from John Smitheman dated 1780); Mr. John Pritchard (gift inscription from Edward Brown dated October 1831); Estelle Doheny (bookplate; her sale Christie's New York, 21 February 1989, lot 1918).
