Exhibited Against him by the Crown for Deposing on the 26th of January, 1808, William Bligh. London: Sherwood Hefly, 1811. 8 o (213 x 126 mm). Errata slip at end. (Some light soiling.) Contemporary half roan gilt, marbled boards (some light rubbing). FIRST EDITION of this exceedingly rare account of the second Bligh mutiny. In this little-known event, Gov. William Bligh of New South Wales was overthrown by Lt. Col. George Johnston The former sailing-master of Cook's Resolution and commander of the Bounty languished two years in an Australian jail before being released. Johnston and others, like Fletcher Christian before them, had resented the irascible Bligh's harsh exercise of authority (and his restrictions on liquor imports). Johnston was cashiered in this court-martial. Bligh was promoted to Admiral. Ferguson 514; Spence 111.
