The Order was founded in the 1840s in Illinois by an A.M.E.Church clergyman as a secret society to help slaves escape via the Underground Railroad. Reorganized after the Civil War in Missouri as a conventional fraternal order, membership declined until the 1930s when the Mississippi branch began raising money to build a hospital in the town of Mound Bayou, which finally opened in 1942 with an all-Black staff.
