FIRST EDITION OF FAMOUS WORK ON METALLURGY. BIRINGUCCIO, VANOCCIO. De la pirotechnia. Libri X. Dove ampiamente si tratta non solo di ogni forte & diversita di miniere, ma anchora quanto si ricerca intorno à la prattica di quelle cose di quel che si appartiene a l'arte de la fusione ouer gitto de metalli come d'ogni altra cosa simile à questa... Venetia (stampata per Venturino Roffinello. Ad instantia di Curtio Nauo. & Fratelli) 1540. 8:o (211x148 mm.). (8), 1-168 (last page blank) ll. Title within wide woodcut border, woodcut initials, many woodcuts in text. Modern (early 20th century) brown half calf, somewhat faded gilt and blindtooled spine in six compartments, red edges. (bound by Hedberg). Title and first leaf reinforced in lower margin. Minor foxing. First edition. Vannoccio (Vannocio) Biringuccio (1480-about 1539), Italian metallurgist. EDIT 16 CNCE 6156. Compare Dorbon-Aine 368; Duveen p. 79 ("...famous book on metallurgy and mining, containing interesting chapters on alchemy,..."). From the library of Carl Sahlin. Carl Sahlin (1861-1943), industrialist, writer on the science of mining and metallurgy. He started his collecting as early as 1897 as a student of mining. Later he became head of the Ironworks part of the Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB (1893-1900), and then manager at Laxå Bruk. President of the Swedish Iron and Steel Works' Association 1904-1928, delegate of the Swedish Ironmasters' Association. He wrote extensively about mining and foundry history (also numismatics) and founded Bergslagets library and museum. He was also one of the founders of the Technical museum in Stockholm, to which museum he also donated his vast collections on mining and related history, including part of his library in 1933.
