Hand-coloured aquatint title and 12 fine plates after Holbein, each of the plates within a bistre border. (Small repaired hole to lower blank margin of the third plate, similar small repaired hole in image area of fifth plate.) Contemporary Swiss/German red morocco gilt, covers elaborately panelled in gilt with onlays of dark green, yellow and red morocco, the flat spine in seven compartments, dark green morocco lettering-piece in one, the others with repeat pattern of a small onlaid dark-green morocco roundel surrounded by gilt small tools, marbled endpapers, g.e., modern slip-case. A VERY FINE COPY OF A RARE WORK, IN AN EXUBERANT BINDING: perhaps intended for presentation. Méchel issued a series of four works, based on Holbein's paintings and drawings, between 1780 and 1794. They are perhaps more usually seen in bistre or black-and-white, and were apparently available either as separate works, as here, or under the general title Oeuvre de Jean Holbein . Colas 1462; cf.
