Quarto (9 x 7 inches; 228x176 mm). Folding engraved map of Cayenne, with an additional manuscript flap (4 ¾ x 6 ¼ inches, 120 x 160) extending the area of coastline covered by the map, both the engraved map and the extension with informed manuscript notations in a single contemporary hand. Contemporary French speckled calf, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt. Condition: Some light dampstaining. Provenance : Jacques Aleaume (early inscription on front pastedown); Henry, Duke of Beaufort (armorial bookplate, dated 1704, detached from the front pastedown and loosely inserted, two manuscript shelf marks). a very fine copy of the first edition of an important and rare record of the french attempts to re-establish a colony in guiana. The work includes a disctionary of the Caribbee Indian language in the rear. This copy is particularly interesting because of the contemporary manuscript additions to the fine detailed map . These include the addition of physical features on the flap extension, as well as the naming of rivers, capes and bays on the engraving, as well as occasional notes about the natives, etc. All of which suggest that the manuscript was made by a member of one of the early expeditions to the island, perhaps even someone who took part in the 1651/2 voyage. The early owner Jacques Aleaume is an obvious candidate. European Americana 664/15; Arents 287; Field 127; JCB (3) III:106-7; Pilling 383; Sabin 5269.
