BIBLE, New Testament, in Greek. Paris: Robert Estienne, 1546. Bound in 2 volumes, 16º (124 x 173mm). Ruled in red, woodcut basilisk device on titles and the Estienne device at end of volume II, numerous headpieces and initials. Early 18th-century red morocco, gilt border round sides composed of small tools, gilt spine, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (one label chipped). Provenance : Jean Mettayer (inscription on final blank dated February 1622) – Scott of Staffordshire (armorial bookplate).

THE FIRST ESTIENNE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT and the first book to be printed in Claude Garamond’s second font of 'grecs du roi’. The edition is based on a comparison of printed texts (for example the Complutensian Polyglot) and manuscripts collated by Robert Estienne’s son, Henri II.
