Amsterdam: Menassah ben Israel for Henricus Laurentius, 1635 - 1636. 4to (218 x 175 mm). 4 parts in 1 volume. In Hebrew, text printed in two columns. Latin title page with engraved printer's device, 4 engraved title pages in Hebrew, 3 with ink alterations changing 1631 into 1636. With blank leaf 370 at the end of the Later Prophets. Modern panelled calf in style, with morocco spine labels. Condition: light marginalia, edges somewhat soiled, preliminaries lightly thumbsoiled. Provenance: Contemporary manuscript marginal annotations in Latin and Greek. a fine early imprint from the first hebrew printing press.in amsterdam. Menasseh ben Israel, a Portuguese-Jewish rabbi, kabbalist, scholar and writer, founded the first Hebrew printing press in Amsterdam in 1626. Born on Madeira in 1604 and originally named Manoel Dias Soeiro, Menasseh ben Israel's family escaped the inquisition, and arrived in the Netherlands in 1610. One of his early printing efforts, El Conciliador , won him acclaim as a scholar. Taking his Messianic approach to England in 1655, Menasseh Ben Israel was in London when Oliver Cromwell summoned the Whitehall Conferance to debate the re-admittance of Jews into England. The conferance found that no law forbade Jews and the door was opened for their gradual return. One of his finest works, Vindiciae Judaeorum , was written in response to those against the re-admittance of the Jews into London and published the year before his death in 1656.
