Hamburg: Impressa typis Elianis, per Iohannem Saxonem [i.e Johann Saxo], 1587. The first edition of the great Hutter Bible. Full contemporary blind stamped pigskin over boards. 15 x 10 inches (380 x 240 cm); [10], 1572 [i.e. 1568] pp., printed in fine Hebrew types; Bound with HUTTER, ELIAS. Cvbvs alphabeticvs sanctae Ebraeae lingvae... Hamburg: Jacobvs Wolfivs, 1588. [30] ff. Bosses removed from the binding, lacking straps and catches, but in all a very well preserved example of an oversize German blindstamped binding of the period, with some very beautiful rolls. This copy of the Bible is full margined and overall is in uncommonly fine condition for a book that frequently saw hard use. Commonly referred to as the Hutter Bible, this was the earliest production of an Hebrew press in Hamburg, and is renowned for its typographical excellence, on which Darlow & Moule have an extensive note.
