London: A.M. for the Companie of Stationers, 1655. 2 works in one, 8° (170 x 115mm). Contemporary English black morocco gilt, with red morocco onlays, covers panelled with rolltools and fillets, the central panel with onlays at the corners and at the centre, elaborately tooled with various small tools including volutes leaves and parrot's heads, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, each with variously shaped onlays, tooled similarly to covers, g.e. (a few small pieces of onlay lacking, remains of white-metal clasps). A finely worked English (probably London) "Restoration" binding with particularly delicate gilt tooling: tantilisingly unidentified. The most characteristic tools are a pair of parrot's heads, versions of which were used by at least three shops (Henry Evans, the Naval binder and Lewis's) and an unusual Iris flowerhead.
