Beschreibung:

Besançon Tarot, circa 1795, Strasbourg, Louis Carey, 78 of 78 cards, woodblock printed and stencil colored, 2 of coupes reads, TAROS FIN DE L. CAREY A STRASBOURG. Major Arcana and courts are full-length figures, French card titles, Roman numerals, Italian suits, two indices, square corners. In 1793, the French National Convention decreed that all royal symbols be removed from the design on playing cards, thus, III L'Imperatrice and IV L'Empereur were replaced by III La Grand Mere and IIII Le Grand Pere, respectively, VIIII L'Ermite became VIIII Le Peauvre, XX Le Jugement was changed to XX La Trompete, kings and queens of the court cards lost their crowns and were called Genie and Liberte, and the valets (jacks) were promoted to Egalite. Several misspellings, such as Tenperance for Temperance, L'Ftoile for L'Etoile and Baatons for Batons, may have resulted from illiterate artisans. Backs are an overall pattern of dots and asterisks in blue. Size 4 13/16 in. (12.3 cm.) high, 2 9/16 in. (6.5 cm.) wide. A few cards slightly worn, five cards have slightly different back design (XVIII La Lune, cavalier of epee, X of baatons, VIII of coupes and VIII of deniers), partial surface loss to X of deniers. Kaplan I, 155. (2)
