Small 4° (194 x 139 mm). 30 engraved plates (2 folding). (Some overall browning, spotting and offsetting, plate 21 bound in at end torn crossing image and repaired, lower right corner in facsimile, plate 27 torn at fold touching image.) Contemporary calf, flat spine with 6 gilt bands (head of spine rebacked, small repair to foot of spine, some overall light wear); red quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : George Wager (signature on flyleaf). FIRST EDITION OF “THE EARLIEST ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURAL WORK WRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN AND PUBLISHED IN THIS COUNTRY …the plans in this book are adaptable to the simpler structures of farm and village… [Benjamin] believed that his circular staircase for the State House at Hartford was the first ‘that was ever made in New England’” ( Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society ). Some of Benjamin’s other notable designs include the Charles Street Meeting House (Boston, 1804), West Church Meeting House (Boston, 1806), Rhode Island Union Bank (Newport, RI, 1817), and the Fifth Universalist Church (now the Charles Playhouse, Boston, 1838-1839). “Through his books ‘late colonial’ details and designs were broadcast throughout New England, as English ideas had been broadcast by English books in colonial times, and there is scarcely a village which in moulding profiles, cornice details, church spire, or farm-house does not reflect his influence" ( DAB ). RARE : according to American Book Prices Current , no complete copy of this edition of this work has appeared at auction in at least 35 years.
