BELL, Thomas (1792-1880). Monograph of the Testudinata . [London: Halembourg, 1836-1842]. 8 parts in one volume, 2° (367 x 272 mm). 40 hand-colored engraved plates by Edward Lear after J.C.D. Contemporary green half morocco gilt, green cloth boards (extremities lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION of this important and rare work on turtles, originally issued in 8 parts and never completed as a result of the financial failure of the publisher; the introduction ends mid-sentence on page xxiv, and a title-page was never produced (as in this copy). The plates were prepared by Edward Lear from J.C.D. Sowerby's drawings for Thomas Bell's Monograph of the Testudinata , published in parts from 1836 to 1842. The work was never completed and only 40 plates were published. The unsold stock and unpublished plates were sold to Henry Sotheran. Sotheran's decided to issue the complete set of plates and J.E. Gray (1800-1875) of the British Museum undertook to update the text, resulting in the edition of 1872, complete with 60 engraved plates. An exceptionally fine copy with blanks interleaved. EXCEEDINGLY RARE : According to American Book Prices Current , only one complete copy of this work has sold at auction in the last 35 years: Christie’s London, 18 March 1981, lot 16. Nissen IVB 296; Edwards, E.E. “Bibliographic notes on Bell’s Monograph of the Testudinata and Tortoises, Terrapins, and Turtles drawn from life by Sowerby and Lear”, reprinted 1970.
