An effusively grateful letter at the beginning of Beaumarchais's association with the banker Pâris-Duverney, casting doubt upon a memoir, the degree of learning in which makes him doubt his correspondent's belief that it is the work of a young officer, and hinting at their future collaboration: 'J'exciperay mesme de votre confiance pour vous communiquer avec une louable franchise un projet qui mest tombé en lidée et qui me paroit concourir parfaitement au but que vous vous proposés, trop heureux si je puis reussir a faire quelque chose qui vous soit agreable.' Beaumarchais's meeting, shortly before the date of this letter, with the wealthy entrepreneur Joseph Pâris-Duverney, was to transform his fortunes and lay the foundation of his future literary and political success. Born Pierre-Auguste Caron the son of a watchmaker, he was to purchase noble rank (using the style 'de Beaumarchais') with Pâris-Duverney's assistance within a year of this letter.
