Two autograph letters signed, the first to Madame Vestris, n.p., '9 germinal an 5' [29 March 1797] , sending a letter [not present] for her to present to the Minister in support of her case in a matter concerning the theatre, 'Cet Odéon m'est odieux puisqu'il vous ôte le nécessaire. Allez vous mesme, avec votre air modeste, lui presenter mon momento; rien ne racommande une affaire comme est reconnu de justice rigoureux', with a postscript telling her that one side of his letter is unsealed so that she may read it, 'un peu de cire apres lecture faite, lui rendra la virginité qu'un viol inocent lui enlève', one page, 4to ; the second to 'Le Citoyen Le Normand', n.p. 'ce 12 ventose, an 6' [2 February 1798] , requesting that he convey his gratitude to the Minister for an intervention on his behalf in the matter of his property, and asking that Citizen Girard be told that 'son zèle tres estimable à poursuivre les debiteurs de la nation porte à faux sur moi, pauvre hère, qui ne suis que son créancier', 3 pages, 4to . Beaumarchais who had engaged in speculations some time previously was financially ruined during the years after the Revolution. In the second letter he sets out his grievances about the depreciation of his assignats , which he is obliged to repay at their original value. The actress Francoise-Rose Gourgaud, Madame Vestris, was one of those who sided with the republican minority who left the Comédie Française at the Revolution. (2)
