(small tears to label with slight loss, extremities rubbed). Provenance : John Scott 1st Earl of Eldon (1751-1838, signature, armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION, a very fine copy. Beatson was a reforming governor whose measures were not always appreciated (there was a mutiny on the island in December 1811), but his main aim was to make the island more self-sufficient and less reliant on the East India Company.
