BAYLY, W. The Cricket Chronicle for the Season 1863 . London: A.H. Bailey & Co, 1864. 16° (140 x 91mm). iv, 513pp. (Title detached, penultimate leaf detached and torn at margins.) Original embossed cloth, gilt lettered and dated on spine and cover (spine block broken, piece torn from head of spine, covers detaching). ONLY ISSUE OF A VERY SCARCE PUBLICATION. It appeared in same year as the first issue of John Wisden’s Cricketer’s Almanack , though the cover is sometimes dated 1863 rather than 1864. A thicker publication with far greater content than Wisden or Lillywhite, due in part to the inclusion of overseas matches, it sold at the higher price of 2/6d, and perhaps suffered both from being more expensive and not having the name of a famous cricketer attached. Allen 87; Taylor p.14; Goldman p.56; Padwick 902. LOVE, James, pseudonym of James DANCE. ‘Cricket. An heroic poem’, extracted from James Love’s Poems on Several Occasions [Edinburgh: R. Fleming, 1754], and bound with the title-page and dedication leaf of Cricket: An Heroic Poem . London: for the author, 1770. 8°. (Dedication leaf cropped with some loss of letters, footnote on B2v also cropped with loss.) Early 20th-century half calf, spine gilt lettered. Provenance : ‘The author was no cricketer, but is supposed to have got a handsome present for this poem’ (contemporary inscription on dedication leaf) – Title and imprint of the 1754 edition recorded in a late 18th-century hand on the first page of the extract. Padwick 6445. With 9 other volumes, including John Nyren, The Young Cricketer’s Tutor (London, 1833) in original green cloth (frontispiece and title waterstained, some soiling), and P.F. Thomas, Old English Cricket (Nottingham: 1922-1929), 6 parts in one volume, 8°, blue morocco (spine faded and rubbed).
