Collection of ten songs for Oliver Morosco's musical extravaganza The Tik-Tok Man of Oz.
New York and Detroit: Jerome H. Remick & Co., [1913]. Pages vary. Folio (355 x 270 mm). Publisher’s pictorial wrappers designed by Rowland. Condition : one cover detached but intact, some slight occasional edgewear; else bright clean copies. Provenance : Fred M. Meyer Collection. rare sheet music for the early oz play . Comprising: “The Magnet of Love”; “When In Trouble Come To Papa”; “The Waltz Scream”; “Dear Old Hank; “The Clockwork Man”; “Oh My Bow”; “Ask the Flowers ToTell You”; “Rainbow Bride”; “Just For Fun (Flirting Song)”; and “The Army of Oogaboo.” Unable to write an acceptable script for the Shuberts in New York, Baum reworked his musical play Ozma of Oz for Oliver Morosco in Los Angeles. Despite Charlie Ruggles and Charlotte Greenwood being in the cast at different times, The Tik-Tok Man of Oz was only a modest success in Chicago and on the road. Morosco closed the show while it was still in the black and long before it ever reached New York City. The script was the basis for Baum’s Oz Book for 1914, Tik Tok of Oz . He dedicated it to Morosco. [With:] MOROSCO [né Mitchell], Oliver (1876–1945) and Victor Schertzinger (1888-1941). Two interpolated songs : “My Wonderful Dream Girl” and “Oh! Take Me (‘I Think an Awful Lot of You’)”. New York: John Franklin Music Co., [1913]. 6 pp. Folio (340 x 265 mm). Publisher’s two-color pictorial wrappers. Condition : some slight occasional edgewear and minor tears; else bright clean copies. Provenance : Fred M. Meyer Collection. Schertzinger was the musical director of The Tik-Tok Man of Oz and wrote songs on the road with Morosco. “My Wonderful Dream Girl” was his first hit and he went on to write such standards as “Tangerine” and “I Remember You.” Like Gottschalk, he wrote scores for silent movies; he later supplied the songs for Ernst Lubitsch’s The Love Parade (1929) and directed Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in Road to Singapore (1940) and Road to Zanzibar (1941).
