ORIGINAL BLUE WRAPPERS, UNCUT AND UNOPENED, manuscript title on spine (some light chipping or creasing); blue quarter morocco folding-case. Provenance : Major General J.H. Symons (presentation leaf); Pepperell family of New England (armorial bookplate on pastedown). A SUBSCRIBER’S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of Lee’s translation of Batuta’s account of his travels. Batuta “began his travels in 1325 at the age of 21… The history of his travels were committed to writing under the Sultan's orders but not by his own hand. As he told his story his amanuensis wrote it down adding some embellishments of his own. The work was finished in 1355 and was entitled 'A Gift for the Observing wherein are set forth the Curiosities of Cities and the Wonders of Travel.' Batuta’s account includes information about his journeys to Tangiers, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Arabia, Persia, Africa, central Asia, India, Ceylon, and China.
