BATMAN Nos. 499, 500, 500, 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 506, 507, 508, 509, 510, 511, 512, 513, 514, 515, 516, 517, 518, 519, 520, 521, 522, 0 * Lot of 26 Comics Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: DC Comics] Date Published: 1993-1995 Description: Batman #s 499-522 and 0 (including two copies of #500), lot of 26 issues. Generally VF/NM (9.0) or better, except for #s 502 (3.0), 503-507 (5.5), 517 & 519 (8.0). Covers, stories and art by Kelley Jones, Doug Moench, Jim Aparo, Mike Manley, Joe Rubinstein, Ron Wagner, and Eduardo Barreto. Batman Brushed Aside: "The convalescent Caped Crusader taps Azrael to take over as Batman and assume what the tale, with grave pomposity, dubs 'the Mantle of the Bat.' Azrael agrees, but soon swaps the Bat-costume for a preternaturally goofy set of cybernetic armor complete with such I Love the Nineties accoutrements as gauntlet claws, arm rockets, a superfluous midthigh ammo belt, Spikes That Do Precisely Nothing, and, perhaps most weirdly, a laser pointer built into the torso for shining the Bat-symbol on others. "Now that the Batman titles featured Azrael in his ludicrously ultra-weaponized Bat-armor on their covers, sales were surging. The prospect delighted O'Neil and his writers — and worried the hell out of them. Azrael was always meant to serve as an object lesson, a sarcastic comment on the predominant mood, not to become the Sensational Character Find of 1993." — Glen Weldon, The Caped Crusade: Batman and the Rise of Nerd Culture. Simon & Schuster: 2016, p. 193. Note: At the buyer's discretion, this lot of raw comics can be submitted by PBA to CGC for grading and encapsulation with a "DC Universe Collection" provenance designation on the labels. To request this service, contact PBA's comic book department for terms and conditions. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com. Enjoying PBA's Batman sale? A very small number of softcover and limited edition hardcover auction catalogues are available for purchase. The catalogues are fully illustrated, thoroughly researched, and make excellent reference works for Batman fans.
