BATMAN Nos. 422, 423, 424, 425, 430, 431, 432, 433, 434, 435, 436, 437, 438, 439, 440, 441, 442, 443, 444, 445, 446, 447, 448, 449, 450 * Lot of 25 Comics Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: DC Comics Inc.] Date Published: 1988-1990 Description: Batman #s 422-425 and 430-450, lot of 25 issues. Generally F/VF (7.0) to VF/NM (9.0). Covers, stories and art by Jerry Bingham, Jim Starlin, M. D. Bright, Todd McFarlane, Joe Rubinstein, Fred Butler, Jim Aparo, George Pratt, Mike DeCarlo, Christopher Priest, Steve Mitchell, John Byrne, George Perez, Marv Wolfman, Pat Broderick, and John Beatty. Batman's Origin-al Sin: Includes Batman #430, the first ish following Jason Todd's death. There's a strangely affecting scene in which Commissioner Gordon asks Batman if Robin is joining them on a mission to stop a deadly sniper, and Batman quietly replies, "No." This ish features perhaps our favorite non-Miller, non-Mazzucchelli Batman cover of the '80s, and the story adds an interesting wrinkle to Batman's origin. A flashback reveals that young Bruce Wayne was trying to cheer up his dad, who was preoccupied with work, by encouraging him to take a play break. Bruce's dad, Thomas Wayne, flies off the handle and smacks Bruce in an immediately-regretted outburst of temper. Humiliated and angry, young Bruce yells that he wishes his father was dead. That night, a repentant Thomas Wayne takes his family out to the movies to make up for his churlish parenting. After the movie, the Waynes encounter Joe Chill in a dark alley, and Thomas and Martha are gunned down, leaving Bruce an orphan. The comic ends with an anguished Batman, reflecting on painful memories of his dead parents and sidekick, listening to a voice that comes echoing up from his subconscious: "I'm sorry daddy! I didn't mean it!" Note: At the buyer's discretion, this lot of raw comics can be submitted by PBA to CGC for grading and encapsulation with a "DC Universe Collection" provenance designation on the labels. To request this service, contact PBA's comic book department for terms and conditions. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com. Enjoying PBA's Batman sale? A very small number of softcover and limited edition hardcover auction catalogues are available for purchase. The catalogues are fully illustrated, thoroughly researched, and make excellent reference works for Batman fans.
