Hillier spent two years illustrating it, traveling to Africa and Sumatra to study rhinos and producing these large plates of portraits and paintings of five species of rhino, in addition to behavioral sketches. Rhinos are, he says, "wonderful subjects to paint." This copy has an additional proof plate laid in, and the prospectus laid in. The plates were printed by Adrian Lack at the Senecio Press, using a new waterless printing technique developed in Japan by Toray.
