Provenance : Michael Wodhull, 1740-1816, (ownership inscription dated 28th November 1792 and purchase information in ink on first blank) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from A.S.W. Rosenbach, Philadelphia, 30 August 1943) -- donated to SMS 1943. FIRST EDITION. It is not known where or when this story was written, but it has been traditionally ascribed to St. John of Damascus. (BMC: Johannes; Hain: Damascenus, Johannes) and according to GW, this work was compiled by a Greek monk named Johannes, but not identifiable with Johannes Damascenus. Named after the principal characters this is the legend of Josaphat, son of an Indian king who was converted to the Christian religion by the hermit Barlaam.
