Mounted photogravure frontispiece portrait on india paper by Jean Malvaux after Bieber, 174 chromolithographic plates by J. Goffin fils after Rodrigues, half-tone illustrations. (Variable light browning and spotting, occasional minor marking, some light dampstaining affecting margins at beginning and end of both vols., vol. I frontispiece, preliminary and early leaves and final 16 plates with light marginal worming, plate I:50 with tear on image, vol. II lacking portrait and with short marginal tears on half-title and title.) Loose as issued in original textured green cloth portfolios by Carabin-Schildknecht, Brussels, upper covers lettered in gilt and with applied gilt cloth pictorial panels after F. Wissaert (ties worn or lacking, outer edges of portfolios affected by damp, spines wormed). Provenance : Dr. and Senhora Foeppel, Rio de Janeiro, 19 October 1913 (presentation inscription from Gastão and Genoline Barbosa Rodrigues on vol. I half-title). BARBOSA RODRIGUES'S FINE WORK ON THE PALM TREES OF BRAZIL. The author travelled widely in Brazil between 1868 and 1897, pursuing his anthropological studies and assembling a large collection of botanical specimens. He was appointed director of the Manaos botanical museum in 1883, where he stayed until 1889, when he was appointed director of the botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro, a position he held until his death in 1909. In keeping with his interest in anthropology, the plates to Sertum palmarum Brasilien often show figures of Amazonian tribesmen around the trees in their landscapes; other plates give botanical details of the leaves and fruits.
