A Series of Engravings, Accompanied with Explanations, Intended to Illustrate the Morbid Anatomy of Some of the Most Important Parts of the Human Body. London: W. Bulmer & Co., 1803. Folio (320 x 239 mm). [4], [i]-228, [2] blank, [7] index pp. Half-title. 73 engraved plates dated 1798-1802. Cloth-backed marbled board, morocco corners. Pencil annotation to title, scattered spotting to plates (heavier to a few), old dampstain to margins of a few plates, text leaves toned, f.f.e.p. detached, boards scratched, corners dry. Provenance: L. Erskine Hill (ownership inscription dated 1889); W. Bulloch (ownership inscription dated 1898); W.W. Woods (ownership inscription dated 1931); London Hospital Medical College Library (bookplate; inkstamp to first blank and half-title). FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. The present engravings—originally issued in 10 parts from 1798-1802—were executed to accompany Baille's Morbid anatomy (1793), "the first systematic textbook of pathology" (Heirs). This edition includes a dedication and index not found in the parts issue. The present copy belonged to British physiologist Sir Leonard Erskine Hill, Fellow of the Royal Society, for whom "Hill's sign" is named.
