by John Goldin & Co., Washington, D.C. with ink inscription, Maj. Gen. Wesley Merritt/U.S. Vols./Capt. 2nd U.S. Cav./Bvt. Brig. Gen. U.S. Army on verso believed to be in Merritt's hand. According to Heitman, Merritt received brevet brigadier and major general rank only on March 13,1865 retaining his regular rank of captain, yet there is no evidence of the required revenue stamp suggesting that this cdv is post-war, circa 1866. At Gettysburg where he was brevetted for "gallantry" Merritt led a brigade in Buford's cavalry division. Contrary to the information penciled on back the image is published, simply a reverse of plate used in Generals In Blue. Condition:Cdv is VG with bumped corners and minor handling.
