Title: Autograph poem signed by James Whitcomb Riley Author: Riley, James Whitcomb Place: Publisher: Date: c.1925 Description: 9 line inscription in ink, containing a 6 line poem, on a sheet of paper, excised from an autograph book. Paper is 20x17 cm. (7¾x6¾"). The holograph inscription reads, "Jame Whitcomb Riley- / "The Raggedy Man." / A Valentine (Supplement). / With joy too great / For words to state / Or tongue to dare articulate / I here design / This Valentine / In fealty, O friend of mine." Additionally, there are a few other autographs and inscriptions on this leaf, which was excised from the autograph book of John C. Brownell. On same side as the poem is an ink inscription from Douglass Sherley, and American author born in 1857. On verso 2 other autographs, one of which from Alessandro Salvini, and actor born in 1861, died 1896. Also included with the lot, is a newspaper clipping containing the story of how the inscription from Riley to Brownell was obtained, in a letter to the Editor of The New York Times, dated Feb. 12, 1934.
