Letter introducing Clymer to Robert Stevenson who had spent three years as a nurse at the Frankford Asylum for the Insane, a respectable, honest and sober young man who would join the ship as Clymer’s assistant, bringing with him a “vaccine scab…taken from a healthy child” who had recovered from the yellow fever which reached epidemic proportions in the US that year. It’s unknown if Stevenson was aboard the Cyane (as Clymer was) a year later when the warship sailed into Monterey Bay and mistakenly “captured” California from Mexico.
