Autograph Letter Signed three times (“Ayn,” “Ayn Rand O’Connor,” “Mrs. Frank O’Connor”), 6pp, 4to, The Mayflower Hotel, New York, July 31, 1949, folding creases, else fine. This letter is addressed to a long-time friend of Rand's (Marjorie Hiss, sister-in-law to Alger Hiss) for whom she was evidently asked to detail her own impressions of her friend's collapsing marriage in a letter which may have been used as a legal document in a divorce case. With her prodigious powers of observation and analysis, she presents a step-by-step account of a marriage with a promising start that turned sour and explains why Marjorie should divorce Mr. Hiss. Perhaps because of the letter's possible legal status, she deemed it necessary to sign her full, legal name ("Ayn Rand O'Connor") and California address, in addition to her married name and signoff. It is unusual, perhaps singular, for a Rand document to bear three distinct forms of her signature in this manner. See illustration.
