AUSTEN, Jane]. Northanger Abbey: and Persuasion. London: C.Roworth (vols.I & II) and T.Davison (vols.III & IV) for John Murray 1818. 4 volumes, 12° (178 x 102mm). Half-titles (with variant to vol. IV, reading: 'PERSUASION./ [rule] /VOL. IV.') bound before titles (lacking two final blanks in vol.IV). Contemporary French sheep-backed glazed paper boards, speckled in black, with green-stained vellum corners and the arms of CHARLES STUART BARON STUART DE ROTHESAY (Davenport p.358) blocked in gilt on covers, flat-backed spines, each vol. with two red morocco lettering-pieces (slight surface damage to leather of spines, head of spines of vols.I and II chipped). Provenance : Baron Stuart de Rothesay (binding). FIRST EDITION, with an unrecorded state of the half-title to volume IV. This more usually reads 'PERSUASION./ [rule] /VOL. II.' (see Gilson p.93). The half-title and title are conjugate and the recto of the half-title exhibits some offsetting from the final page of text (P6 v ). Baron Stuart was British Ambassador to Paris from 1815 until 1830. Cf. Gilson A9. We are grateful to Dr. David Gilson for confirming that this state is entirely unrecorded. (4)
