AUSTEN, Jane (1775-1817)]. Emma: A novel... By the Author of "Pride and Prejudice," &c. &c . London: John Murray 1816. 3 volumes, 12 o (166 x 102 mm). Half-titles in each volume. (Some minor worming or tears, some touching text, most expertly repaired.) Contemporary half morocco (hinges discreetly tightened). FIRST EDITION, with half-titles in each volume, including volume one, which is rarely present. Arguably Jane Austen's greatest novel, Emma was begun on 21 January 1814 and finished a little over a year later on 29 March 1815. Following her visit to Carlton House in November 1815, she received an invitation to dedicate the work to the Prince Regent, who was a great admirer of her works. Henry Austen negotiated the publication of the work with John Murray and the firm's records indicate that of the 2000 copies printed, 1250 were sold in the first year. The second edition was not issued until Bentley published a collected edition in 1833. Gilson A8; Keynes p. 14; Sadleir I, 62d. (3)
