AUREOLI, Petrus (c.1280-1322). Compendium litteralis sensus totius bibliae . [Strassburg: Georg Husner, not after 1476]. Chancery 2° (300 x 216mm). Collation: [1 10 2-13 8 14 6 (5+1) 15 6 16-17 8 18-19 6 ] (1/1r blank, 1/1v text). 35 lines. Type: 1:102G. First 6-line initial in green on purple ground with leafy extensions, 3- and 4-line initials alternating in red and blue, capital strokes and underlining in red, headlines and shoulder headings supplied in red, contemporary marginal section numbering in ink, some MS quiring still visible, several lines of text wanting at beginning or end of a page supplied in a contemporary hand as in both British Library copies (5/8v, 15/1v). (Light dampstaining, marginal stain in first few leaves, small tear in upper margin of first leaf repaired.) Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, remains of 2 fore-edge catches (brass backplates only), spine painted white with title and shelfmark written over, (spine extremities only slightly worn). Provenance : some contemporary MS corrections -- Budweis, Capuchins (inscription on first leaf) -- L.H.P. Klotz (sale Christie's, 2 November 1994, lot 21) -- H. Legel (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of Biblical commentary by the Franciscan scholar, Petrus Aureoli, which he compiled for his lectures on the Scriptures as regent master at Paris.
