AUGUSTINUS, Aurelius De fuga mulierum; De continentia; De contemptu mundi [and] HIERONYMUS (St.) - Epistola ad Paulinum presbyterum [and] AUGUSTINUS - Sermones de vita clericorum. [Cologne, U. Zell, 1470-4to: [ff., ll. (min. soiling). Later (19th c.?) overl. vellum, flat spine (sl. stained, back cover rep.). Excellent well-preserved copy. Editio princeps of a collection of treatises and sermons by (pseudo-) Augustine and the letter from St. Jerome (c. 347-to bishop Paulinus of Antioch. Printed by Cologne’s first printer Ulrich Zell (d. 1507). "De fuga" was also printed in the same period by the same printer, together with B. de Clairvaux' "Speculum de honestate vitae". Printed in gothic type. Decoration: rubricated throughout. Four 2-line initials and three 4-line initials of which 4 with red and black penwork extending into the margin (one with a drawing of a bishop). Ref. ISTC ia- GW (Pseudo-Augustinus). - Goff A-- Polain - CIBN A-- BSB-Ink C-- Not in BMC. Prov. At top of f. in cont. handwriting one of the medieval misogynistic proverbs "nec hodie nec heri nec cras crede mulieri" (not today, not yesterday, not tomorrow, never believe in women). - Two libr. stamps. - [Georges Petit].
