AUGSBURG 1729 -- [SCHÜBLER, Johann Jakob (d. 1741). Amor, vehementer quidem flagrans... Augsburg: Johann Michael Probst 1729 or later].
AUGSBURG 1729 -- [SCHÜBLER, Johann Jakob (d. 1741). Amor, vehementer quidem flagrans... Augsburg: Johann Michael Probst 1729 or later]. 2 o (128 x 174 mm). 15 engravings (3 in two states with and without text in borderline) by JOHANN BALTHAZAR PROBST (1673-1750) after JOHANN JACOB SCHüBLER (trimmed along image border and mounted on old paper); all matted and house in a cloth folding case. Provenance : armorial blind-stamp on mount. A very rare series of early Bavarian roccoco representations of the Italian Commedia dell' Arte . "The scenario that inspired Probst is known only through this album, but is surprisingly complete in its twelve episodes. It must have been elaborately produced, as we may deduce from the intricate scenery and props in his illustrations" (Lawner, Harlequin on the Moon, Commedia dell' Arte and the Visual Arts New York, 1998, pp. 122-26). The prints are from the above work, which included text in Latin and German. Brunet I:239; Graesse I:106; Lipperheide Ucc 5; Millard Northern European Books 115.
