Attributed to William Matthew Prior (American, 1806-1873) Portrait of Child with a Pet Dog. Unsigned. Oil on artist canvas, portraying the child wearing a pink dress and holding one shoe, seated on a patterned carpet next to a black and white dog before red tasseled drapery, 27 x 22 in., in original molded giltwood frame. Condition: Two repaired tears l.l., craquelure, retouch. Note: William Matthew Prior was born in Bath, Maine. He traveled widely throughout New England, working as a portrait painter, but in 1841 he settled in Boston. There, he opened a portrait studio with his brother-in-law Sturtevant Hamblin and stayed there until 1846. He then moved to East Boston. He is best known for his primitive, flat style of portraits.
