Attributed to Pierre Antoine Bellangé (1758-1827)
Pair of large moulded and carved mahogany console tables, the sea green marble top resting on a belt opening to a drawer, fine gilt bronze ornamentation with Mercury head, lion's nose and stylised foliage, resting on scroll and spread wing uprights; accidents and restorations).
Empire period.
H 102 x W 173 x D 50 cm
Provenance: Galerie Philippe Vichot, circa 1991
Bibliography
S. Cordier, Bellangé, ébénistes, une histoire du goût au XIXe siècle, Paris, 2012.
A console having belonged to Marshal Berthier datable circa 1808, attributed to Pierre Antoine Bellangé and illustrated in the reference work on the cabinetmaker (op. cit., pp. 436-437), displays the same stylistic characteristics. In particular, it has the same winged console jambs terminating in the same highly original carved foot, the same arrangement of bronzes and, in particular, the same foliage motifs at the top of the jambs. The distinctive decoration of the feet also adorns a later console delivered by Louis Alexandre Bellangé around 1830 to the Prefecture of Blois (op. cit., p. 527) as well as a third console in lemonwood circa 1825-1830 (op. cit., p. 516)
