Portrait of a gentleman said to be General John Moore in a green jacket.
Oil on canvas. 30 x 25 inches (76 x 63.5 cm). Provenance : Sotheby's New York, 12 June 1975, lot 145; with Arthur Ackermann, New York. Abbott, born in Leicestershire in 1760 or 1761, was trained from 1775 under Francis Haymen in London. One of his most famous works is his portrait of Nelson (now at 10 Downing Street). At age 40 he went insane and was treated by Dr. Munro who also looked after George III. A heroic British figure, General John Moore (1761-1809), saw action in the American War of Independence in 1778-83, campaigned in Corsica and in Ireland in 1798 and was an MP from 1784-1790. In the Napoleonic Peninsula War of 1808-09 Moore famously defended Corunna to allow his army to retreat and died in that defense.
