Read more Sean Scully Lot 40 - 'Untitled 3-7-86 (1986)' Estimate: €70,000 - €100,000 With its vertical bands of grey and black pastel, enlivened on the left with a rectangular inset of charcoal black and burnt sienna, and on the right by an unexpected reduction in height of the final grey stripe, this drawing is full of the sense of confidence and bravura that characterises Scully's work. Positioned slightly to the right of the paper, with unequal borders, gives the drawing an added sense of movement and energy, belying its apparent simplicity. The stripes of grey and black are applied over a base colour of light sienna pastel, with the orange-brown breaking through the overlaid surface, again adding animation to the drawing. Born in Dublin but raised in the UK, Scully in more recent years has lived and worked in New York, while also maintaining studios in Barcelona and other cities. His early work was characterised by a geometric approach, where diagonal stripes of paint were applied using masking tape, to achieve a hard-edged precise effect. With the passing of years, however, his technique loosened up and the edges of his paintings and drawings, while still adhering to a rigorous underlying geometry, have become more painterly and direct. There is nothing routine about Scully's art; no matter what medium he works with, he is pushing the boundaries and exploring every aspect of colour, pigment, shape, texture and size.
