THE SURRENDER OF MONTREAL A broadside issued by the official printer to Congress, which presents in the left-hand column prints the 11 articles of Capitulation, with names of the 12 Canadian signers at bottom, and at the right, the text of Brigadier General Montgomery's certification and proclamation to the inhabitants of Montreal, issued the day before his Continental troops took possession of the city. Montgomery's liberal terms promise free exercise of religion, and pursuit of trade, that Canadians shall not be forced to bear arms against "the Mother Country," or to quarter American troops, and shall be "maintained in the free possession and enjoyment of their rights, goods and effects."
