Beschreibung:

ARTHUR HAYGARTH] Cricket Scores and Biographies of Celebrated Cricketers London: Kent and Lillywhite [Longmans from vol. V], 1862-1925. 15 vols., 8vo., full-page engraved plate of stump heights in vol. I (vol. I with pencil scoring in margins and quire E pulled; vol. III with quires S-X pulled; minor spotting in the later vols.), original cloth. Provenance : Harry Alfred Cohen (vols. I, III-IV only with his bookplate). FIRST EDITION. With the exception of the early volumes belonging to Hal Cohen, this set is in fine condition, and is accompanied by 2 loosely-inserted autograph letters, signed, from the author to an unidentified correspondent, dated 107 Warwick St., Eccleston Square, London S.W., 5 and 28 March 1892, both 4p. and concerning publication of vol. XIV. In the former, Haygarth promises to put by "the filled up circulars including those promised by Mr. Alcock (363) and those promised by Mr. Jenkins (9) ... to put in your museum"; he agrees "about publishing vol. XIV as an experiment", and is pleased that the Sporting Life has published his "Appeal to Cricketers" in full. His other letter makes it clear that he is relying on his correspondent to get the volume published, perhaps by forming a publishing "'syndicate'" if the MCC will not help (this second letter severed along fold, and trimmed with slight loss at margin of 3rd page). Allen 79; Britton p. 25; Taylor p. 34; Padwick 805. (15)
