Title: Art as a Muscular Principle: 10 Artists and San Francisco 1950-1965 - book plus pair of framed invitations to the opening of the show Author: Place: Publisher: John and Norah Warbeke Gallery / Mount Holyoke College Date: 1975 Description: 97 pp. Illustrated with photographs. With cover photograph of Jay De Feo, by Wallace Berman 1958. 22.7x15 cm (9x6") original wrappers. The lot also includes a pair of invitations to the show's opening on February 28, 1975 at 8:00 pm. Each invitation is 9x4" and has a portrait photograph of Jay De Feo (one matched the cover of the book, the other is her nude in heels, mopping the floor). Artists of the show which ran from February 28 - March 20, 1975, included Wallace Berman Joan Brown Bruce Conner Jay De Feo, George Herms Jess, Robert Lavigne and more. With poem by Michael McClure, which helps to explain the title of the art show "Art as a Muscular Principle." The book with the name Robert Emory Johnson (a San Francisco artist) on the first blank leaf, plus he writes notes on the backside of the pair of framed invitations. He writes: "Jay sent this to me (The "new" photo) and said "This is the real 'Art as a Muscular Principal'". I got Merrill Greene started on this project. Her thesis at Holyoke [was] Art as a Muscular Principal[sic]. Jays photo of herself in Larkspur kitchen (mopping the floor in high heel shoes)." Great lot of San Francisco Counterculture art. Lot Amendments Condition: A bit of wear to wrappers; small faint yellow spot to one invitation; near fine. Item number: 245038
