ARRAS, Monastery of St. Vaast -- Sir Thomas PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Codices Manuscripti in Bibliotheca Sti. Vedatsi, apud Atrebatiam . Paris: Imprimerie Pihan Delaforest for Sir Thomas Phillipps, 1828. 8 o (194 x 120 mm). Original Middle Hill boards, uncut. The original issue; in 1850 some copies were re-issued with a Middle Hill title-page and a new preface. A former librarian at Arras, named Caron, had excised a number of leaves from the manuscripts in his care, which Phillipps then acquired from an Amiens bookbinder. Phillipps graciously offered them to the Mayor of Arras at cost (900 frs.). "The corporation, somewhat unrealistically, asked for a description of each leaf and a note of the book from which it had been cut, thereby drawing upon itself the collector's wrath, who kept them" (Munby, Phillipps Studies , IV, pp.38-39).
