ARNOLD, BENEDICT, Major General, Continental Army, traitor . Concluding portion of an autograph letter signed ("B. Arnold"), a contemporary note explains that the letter was to W. Chipman in St. John's, New Brunswick; from London, 26 March 1796. 8 lines, 1 page, an oblong, 98 x 200mm. (3 3/4 x 8 in.), early owner's note: "Original, Valuable," in upper left, verso with part of old album mounting. "I return you many thanks for your friendly congratulations on my return to this country [Great Britain] and though my views were not realized, I think myself fortunate to have escaped with life and without loss of property. Mrs. Arnold unites with me in best respects to you and Mrs. Chipman. We are all well as usual and happy to hear that our friends at St. John enjoy their health."
