Col Arnold who Commanded the Provincial Troops Sent to Quebec Through the Wilderness of Canada and was Wounded in Storming that City Under General Montgomery .
London: Thomas Hart 26 March 1776.] Mezzotint engraved by R. Purcell, trimmed to the image (13x9 ¾ inches, 327x245 mm). Condition: A few short edge tears, a few light creases. Matted. the first portrait print of benedict arnold, depicting him at the 1775 battle and siege of quebec. This mezzotint of Benedict Arnold is one of a series of fictitious portraits done in London by R. Purcell (under the pseudonym C. Corbutt) in the early years of the American Revolution. On 31 December 1775, American forces under Arnold and Richard Montgomery attacked the British at Quebec hoping to enlist the French Canadians to their side. The attack, however, failed miserably. The 1775 invasion would be the first and only American attempt to take control Canada during the American Revolution. The first state of two. Trimming mezzotints to the image was common in the 18th century, as these prints were thus framed. Cresswell, The American Revolution in Drawings and Prints 9.
