Arnauld prepared this work, often described as the Port-Royal Logique , for the young duc de Chevreuse, and it was held in such esteem that over the next 21 years he and his co-author, Nicole, produced five editions. The two authors, who also wrote on geometry, borrowed a number of their terms from mathematics and cast aside outmoded theories of syllogistic logic in favour of the more unconstrained reasoning methods already so brilliantly applied by Descartes.
