Davis asks whether he should allow a captured Confederate surgeon to pass through Union lines to return home. "He has been released & is on his way home in Rienzi....He says he is desirous of returning home & resuming his practice..." -- JONES, Roger (1831-1889), Assistant Inspector General, U. S. Army . S. A . ALS ("W. H. Hammond") to D. W. Camac, Washington, D. C., 26 May 1863. 2 pp., 8vo., on stationery of Surgeon General's Office, creased, very fine . Hammond grants Camac a 10-day furlough. Hammond was an Army surgeon dating back to 1849. He left the service in 1860 to teach at the University of Maryland, but rejoined after Sumter. By April 1862 he was made Surgeon General, a post he held until court-martialed in August 1864 for "irregularities" in liquor contracts. A postwar appeal cleared him of wrongdoing. -- SYKES, George (1822-1880), General, U. S. Army . ALS ("Geo. Sykes") to Mrs. Dr. Bigelow, Camp, 10 December 1862. 2 pp., 8vo., one-inch hole on second page, catching a few words . A letter of condolence after the death of Mrs. Bigelow's husband, a member of Sykes's staff. Dr. Bigelow "endeared himself to my military family by his many estimable qualities...his professional accomplishments were acknowledged by all." -- TOWNSEND, Edward D. (1817-1893), General U. S.
