ARMENIAN MANUSCRIPT.] Hymnal. Late 16th century/early 17th century.
ARMENIAN MANUSCRIPT.] Hymnal. Late 16th century/early 17th century. 103 x 78 mm. MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. 210 leaves. Written in red and black in a regular bolorgir hand, FULL-PAGE PORTRAIT OF A SAINT PLAYING THE ORGAN as frontispiece, SEVEN DECORATIVE HEADPIECES, patterned with coiling tendrils and stylized foliage, the text with numerous small decorations on burnished gold grounds and with zoomorphic initials and border decorations of birds, flowers, figures of Saints and Christ. (Defective in parts, Saint's portrait rubbed and partly effaced.) Contemporary brown blind-tooled morocco "alla greca" over pasteboard, sides with double-fillets and interescting lines enclosing oval leaves, sides flush with text leaves, the smooth spine extended above with thick sewing at ends, one boss on front and two on the back preserved. Provenance : purchased from Harry A. Levinson, 28 November 1947.
