Greek and roman types. 30 lines. Woodcut interlace initials and headpieces, text diagram on I1r. (Lower outer corner of last 3 leaves and top outer corner of last leaf repaired, verso of final leaf a little soiled, a few spots, occasional marginal finger soiling.) 19th-century old-style morocco, stamped in gilt and blind, spines ruled in gilt and blind (extremities rubbed, new endpapers). EDITIO PRINCEPS . This, the first part of the most ambitious publishing programme of the 15th century, is devoted to Aristotle’s works on Logic and includes Porphyry’s introduction to Aristotelian logic. Aldus’s dedicatory preface to his patron, Alberto Pio da Carpi, sets out his plan to print the entire corpus of classical Greek learning, from works of grammar to poetry, philosophy and history. The five parts of the Aldine Aristotle were available separately, as a unique advertisement preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale (Einblattdrucke 897) makes clear. HC *1657; GW 2334; BMC V, 553; BSB-Ink. A-698; Bod-inc. A-384; PMM 38; Goff A-959.
