lot of 7. Includes six vellum partially printed 7.5 x 10" military appointments for Little Raven as an Indian Scout with the 5th Cavalry at Fort Reno, I.T. for private and corporal for six month intervals between 27 July 1885, 28 Jan 1886, 28 July 1886, 28 Jan 1887, 30 July 1887, and 30 Jan. 1888, for terms of six months. Also includes a Feb 12, 1926, 1p TLS written on Dept. of Interior stationery, with red seal with blue ribbons by Charles Burke, Commissioner of Indian Affairs introducing Little Raven: It is a great pleasure to again receive at the Indian Office, in Washington, Little Raven as an elected delegate of the Arapaho Indians of Oklahoma. He has faithfully complied with the treaty stipulations entered into by his Tribe with the United States Government and in every way been loyal, and has always been a friend of the white people. He is therefore entitled to respect, and should receive the kind consideration of those whom he may meet. Little Raven, born in what is now Colorado, was one of the Southern Arapaho who advocated peace with the white settlers. At one point he traveled to Washington to receive a peace medal from President Grant, and reportedly said that he had no peace to make since he had never been at war with the whites. He signed several treaties, but the most significant was the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1867 which gave the Southern Arapaho a reservation in Oklahoma. There he used his energies to help his people adjust to reservation life. One way many Arapaho tried to assure the U.S. that they were not hostile was to serve as scouts for the army. He died on the reservation in 1889. It is uncertain how the 1926 letter relates to the appointments, though it is probable that it is a letter to a direct descendant. Condition: Most with expected soil, some ink a bit light. Overall, very good.
